Elizabeth Vesey was called "Sylph" by her friends, depicting her unpredictability and mysteriousness, her powers of invention, energy and freedom, as Heller (2003) puts it. Vesey is said to have initiated the Bluestocking -name for the gatherings: the story goes that she invited Benjamin Stillingfleet, who declined the invitation due to not having the appropriate black stocking evening dress, to which Elizabeth Vesey is said to have responded "come in your blue stockings", i.e. less formal dress.
